Polar Smectic Films
We report on a new experimental procedure for forming and studying polar smectic liquid-crystal films. A free-standing smectic film is put in contact with a liquid drop, so that the film has one liquid-crystal/air interface and one liquid-crystal/liquid interface. This polar environment results in changes in the orientational order parameter textures observed in the film, including a boojum tex...
متن کاملLong wavelength dynamics of free smectic films
2014 The long wavelength dynamics of monomolecular smectic-A films is studied. Nonlinear nondissipative hydrodynamic equations are derived by means of the Poisson brackets technique. The dissipative terms are constructed, the spectrum of long wavelength modes of the film is found. The transverse sound proves to be anomalously weakly attenuated. The fluctuation contribution to the spectrum is ca...

متن کاملShear instabilities of freely standing thermotropic smectic- A films.
In this Letter we discuss theoretically the instabilities of thermotropic freely standing smectic- A films under shear flow [3]. We show that, in Couette geometry, the centrifugal force pushes the liquid crystal toward the outer boundary and induces smectic layer dilation close to the outer boundary. Under strong shear, this effect induces a layer buckling instability. The critical shear rate i...
